Short version: audio is sent for transcription and not stored by us; dictation history stays on your Mac.
What leaves your Mac
- Dictation audio goes to Groq (api.groq.com) for transcription. On the key-included plan and during the trial it passes through our relay at vox.cialpriceus.com, which forwards the request and records only the duration in seconds, the time and your license number or a random install ID. Audio and text are not stored on our server.
- The transcript goes to a second model on Groq for cleanup, the same way.
- On the your-own-key plan requests go straight to Groq with your key; our server is not involved.
- The live preview while you speak uses macOS speech recognition (Apple) — on-device where macOS supports it for your language, otherwise on Apple’s servers under Apple’s terms.
What stays on your Mac
- A history of recent dictations (30 days / 300 entries by default) in the app folder, readable only by your user account. You can turn it off in Settings.
- Your Groq key and license — in the macOS Keychain.
- An app log —
~/Library/Logs/Vox.log. Dictated text is not logged, with one exception: if cleanup fails, the first 80 characters of the raw sentence are written there.
